Windows 3.1 Operating Modes   

　　Windows 3.1 has three different operating modes，called real mode, standard mode, and 386enhanced mode. When you type WIN to start Windows, the software automatically chooses the operating mode that is appropriate for your hardware．

1 ．Real Mode   
　　Windows automatically runs in real mode on computers that use the Intel 8086 or 8088 microprocessor (or•an equivalent)and on computers with less than 1 MB of memory. When you use real mode, applications do not have access to memory beyond 640KB．

2 ．Standard Mode   
　　Windows automatically runs in standard modern computers with at least 1 MB of memory that use the Intel 80286 microprocessor. In standard mode, your Windows applications can use memory in excess of 640 KB．You can run non-Windows application as well as Windows applications, but non-windows applications must use the full screen. In addition, non-Windows applications can run in the foreground only; that is, when you switch from a non-windows applications to another application（either a Windows application or another non-Windows application），the program you switched away from is suspended until you switch back to it.

3. 386 Enhanced Mode   
　　(1)Windows automatically runs 386 enhanced mode on computers that use the Intel 80386，Intel80486 or Intel Pentium microprocessor and that have at least 2MB of memory. The memory must include640 KB of conventional memory plus at least 1 MB of extended memory, Windows'386 enhanced mode provides two advantages over standard mode．   
　　(2)1n 386 enhanced mode, Windows can use free space on)our hard disk as an extension of internal(RAM) memory. When your internal memory be-comes full, Windows writes data that you're temporarily not using to the hard disk; when you need that data again，Windows retrieves it and moves other data out to disk.   
　　(3)In 386 enhanced mode, you have more control over the way non-Windows applications run. You can display most non-Windows programs in full-screen fashion or in a Windows and you can choose to have a non-Windows application continue running even when you've switched to a different program．

4 ．WINDOWS TIP：   
　　You can find out which operating mode Windows is using by choosing the About Command on Program Manager's Help menu. This command also tells you how much memory is currently available to Windows

3．386增强模式    
　　(I)计算机使用1NTEL80386, 80486或Intel奔腾微处理器，且有至少2MB内存时，Windows自动运行386增强模式下。内存必须包括640KB的常规内存，加上至少1MB的扩展内存Windows386增强模式有两项超过标准模式的优点。   
　　(2)在386增强模式中，Windows能使用硬盘上的剩余空间作为内存的扩充。当内存被占时Windows把暂时不用的数据写到硬盘上，当你需要使用它们时，Windows把它们调入内存而把另一些数据放到硬盘上。    
　　(3)在386增强模式厂，你能够 有更多控制非Windows应用程序运行的方式你可以让多个Windows程序显示在整个屏幕或一个窗口中，甚至在你已切换到了另一个不同的应用程序情形下，你还可以选择一个非Windows应用程序继续执行。

 4 ．Windows提示  
　　你可以通过选择Program Manger（程序管理器）中的Help（帮 助）菜单中的About Command（关 于命令）选择项来查看Windows在 使用何种操作模式。这条命令还会 告诉你当前的Windows可用的内存 有多少。
